Vivid Sydney drone show suspended after technical fault over Darling Harbour

Sydney’s Vivid Festival drone spectacular has been suspended after a technical fault forced operators to abort a performance above Darling Harbour, with organisers citing safety as the overriding priority.

The “Star-Bound: Vivid Sydney Drone Show”, promoted as one of the flagship attractions of Vivid Sydney 2026, was scheduled to feature more than 1,000 drones across 22 performances during the 11-night festival.

In an official statement published through Vivid Sydney channels, organisers confirmed the interruption followed an operational issue detected during the display.

“The specialist operators identified a technical issue and made the decision to safely discontinue the show in line with standard safety protocols,” the statement said.

Festival organisers said the Monday evening 7.30pm performance was halted shortly after launch due to “unforeseen technical difficulties at the start of the performance”.

Vivid Sydney said an assessment was immediately underway involving technical operators and government authorities.

“Public safety is always the number one priority,” organisers stated.

The return of the large-scale drone display had been heavily promoted by Destination NSW after aerial shows were absent from the 2025 festival because of crowd-management and safety concerns.

According to the official Vivid Sydney event page, the “Star-Bound” production was described as a story-driven spectacle combining synchronised drone formations with a cinematic soundtrack composed by Australian musician Antony Partos.

Large crowds had gathered along the Darling Harbour foreshore for the opening performances, with the drone program considered a major tourism drawcard for this year’s festival.

Authorities have not yet confirmed when performances will resume.
