HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been awarded a $99 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy to conduct sea trials for the Zumwalt-class destroyer Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002).

According to the company, the ship arrived at Ingalls in January 2022 to complete installation, activation and testing of combat systems, and the new award covers system test and sea trials work tied to the Navy’s phased delivery approach.

The vessel is also undergoing modernisation upgrades that include integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system, which would make Lyndon B. Johnson the Navy’s second platform equipped with CPS, the company said.

The contract modification is the latest step in the Zumwalt-class program, which has drawn attention for its use of an electric propulsion system and low-observable design, as well as for the complexity of integrating new weapons and mission systems. Sea trials are intended to validate ship performance and readiness before operational service.
