Drones use on the rise

Unmanned aerial vehicles are being deployed for a variety of jobs including monitoring flying foxes, science experiments, crop dusting and the tracking of sea animals.

At a recent roundtable into the use of drones, the House Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs was told they are being used more frequently across a number of commercial sectors as well as police operations and emergency situations.

Dr Jonathan Roberts of the CSIRO told the roundtable his organisation has been using drones for about 15 years.

“We are trying to understand how flying foxes actually fly. Sensors get placed on the flying foxes but to test those sensors out we use unmanned aircraft [which]pretend to be flying foxes,” he said. READ MORE
