AUSA 2026: Microcon unveils sub-2kg EO/IR payload with laser designator

Microcon Vision has announced the MICRO-D, a 1.9kg multi-sensor electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) payload that includes a 30mJ laser target designator. The company said it has secured initial orders and expects first deliveries by the end of 2026.

The payload is intended for small unmanned aircraft and other lightweight airborne platforms, combining intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) functions with laser target designation. Microcon said the system is aimed at platforms operating at lower altitudes, including below cloud cover, to support detection, tracking and designation of targets for compatible precision-guided munitions.

According to the company, MICRO-D integrates seven sensors and functional channels to provide day and thermal imaging, target tracking and laser designation. Microcon said the laser designator is STANAG 3733-compliant and is designed to support workflows from target detection and identification through to designation for engagement.

Additional features cited by Microcon include simultaneous video outputs, line-of-sight stabilisation, an airborne ISR tracker and inertial navigation. Optional AI functions include video motion detection and automatic target recognition.

“The growing use of smaller tactical platforms is creating a need for capabilities that until now have largely been available on larger systems,” said Chen Almog, CEO and co-founder of Microcon Vision. Almog said the company is seeing demand for this capability, including in the US, where it works with affiliate CONTROP USA to provide local support.

Microcon said MICRO-D uses a two-axis gyro-stabilised gimbal and supports Ethernet-based integration, including an SDK and optional MAVLink connectivity. The company described the system as ITAR-free, germanium-free and NDAA-compliant.
