Operator XR launches Interceptor VR platform for counter-drone training

Operator XR, a subsidiary of ASX-listed xReality Group (ASX: XRG), has launched a virtual reality training platform aimed at helping military and law enforcement teams prepare for counter-drone operations without fixed training facilities.

The platform, called Interceptor, was announced at the International Training and Education Conference (ITEC) in London. Operator XR said the system is designed to support training across the detect, identify, track and defeat cycle for counter-small unmanned aerial systems (C-sUAS), using simulated scenarios intended to reflect real-world conditions.

The announcement comes as Australia and other jurisdictions increase focus on uncrewed systems and counter-drone capability. The company’s release referenced recent reporting that the Albanese Government plans to invest up to $5 billion in strengthening uncrewed warfare capabilities, amid concerns about Australia’s capacity to defend against drones and missile threats.

Operator XR said Interceptor can operate entirely offline and can integrate with existing C-sUAS systems, allowing use in remote environments or where connectivity is restricted. The company said it supports training for multiple personnel at once and does not require external tracking, tethering, or backpack PCs.

In the release, Operator XR CEO Wayne Jones said the intent is to address a gap between evolving threats and the pace at which traditional training infrastructure can be built or adapted.

Operator XR listed features including configurable threat scenarios, options for kinetic and non-kinetic defeat training, and reporting intended to support formal training certification. The company also said the system can be set up in under two minutes and cited a weight of 23kg for a two-user configuration.

Interceptor is positioned alongside Operator XR’s existing OP-2 tactical training system, which the company said is used for broader mission rehearsal such as building clearance and force-on-force scenarios, while Interceptor focuses specifically on counter-drone operations.
